Our operations
Our mining operations
Rössing Uranium’s operations focus on two key activities: mining uranium-bearing rock and processing it into uranium oxide, which is used in the global nuclear energy market to generate electricity. Our commitment to safe, efficient, and sustainable mining ensures we meet industry standards while minimising environmental impact.
Our open-pit mine extracts uranium from alaskite, a hard and abrasive granitic rock. To access the ore, we use controlled drilling and blasting, followed by loading and hauling operations. The extracted material is processed through primary crushing, fine crushing, and leaching to produce uranium oxide (U₃O₈), commonly known as yellowcake. This refined product is securely packaged and shipped to customers worldwide.
We continuously enhance our processes through technology, operational efficiencies, and safety improvements. Our approach includes electronic blasting for controlled energy use, slope stability radars for ground monitoring, and pit dewatering initiatives to maintain efficiency and safety.

Life of the mine
Rössing Uranium has been a key contributor to Namibia’s mining sector since 1976, playing a vital role in the global supply of uranium. Over the years, we have continuously evolved our mining methods to ensure efficiency and sustainability. With a strong commitment to responsible resource management, we focus on balancing production with environmental conservation and community engagement.
Future Planning
Our mine’s life has been extended to 2036, thanks to strategic investments in technology, resource planning, and operational efficiency. We are dedicated to optimising uranium extraction while minimising environmental and social impacts. Continuous improvement initiatives help us maintain high production standards while addressing the challenges of modern mining.
Beyond 2036, we are exploring possibilities for further extending the mine’s lifespan through resource optimisation and technological advancements. We continue to assess additional uranium deposits and evaluate innovative mining techniques that could enhance extraction efficiency while maintaining our strong commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Closure Planning
Responsible closure is part of our long-term vision. Our closure plan includes:
- Land rehabilitation and environmental restoration
- Long-term community development initiatives
- Stakeholder collaboration to create lasting economic benefits
By prioritising these efforts, we aim to leave a positive, sustainable legacy for Namibia long after mining operations cease.
