Rössing Uranium and its employees donated portable desks, clothes, stationaries, and food valued at over N$ 200 000 to Ombyarundu Primary School, Ruacana circuit in Omusati region.
The company handed over this donation to the school, on Monday, 6 November, with support from the Rössing Foundation.
Speaking at the handover ceremony Rössing Uranium Manager Corporate Communication Daylight Ekandjo, said Rössing Uranium initiated an Employee Community Project in 2022, where employees are encouraged to nominate projects within the community, that Rössing Uranium employees could support.
The project kicked off well, with a playground constructed by our employees at a kindergarten in Arandis.
In 2023, our employee Hilma Ndeyanayi, nominated Ombyarundu Primary School for support. “We consulted the school to understand their needs, which was benches for the learners to sit on during their lunch breaks, and food items.”
“We discussed internally to find benches which would be more sustainable, and through the Midesk global, Rössing Uranium was able to purchase 130, Three-in-One portable desks, chair, and bag which are the first-ever in Namibia, valued at N$221 000 for the learners. Furthermore, an internal campaign was held, for employees to donate non-perishable food, clothes, and stationaries.
“These portable desks will undoubtedly enhance the learning experience for the young minds. They will no longer have to sit on the cold, hard ground, but can now have a proper and comfortable during their lunch breaks,” she said.
“This is also a reminder that we care for the holistic well-being of our children. No child should have to go to school hungry or without adequate clothing.”
Also speaking at the occasion, Omusati Regional Director of Education, Benjamen Eiseb expressed his gratitude to Rössing Uranium and its employees for the donation. “N$221 000 worth of investment, from one of the oldest mines in our country through their corporate social responsibility is something to be commended,” he said.
He noted that government alone cannot bring up and develop education for a Namibian child, “we need friends in education like Rössing Uranium and Rössing Foundation, because teachers are only responsible for teaching and learning but if it comes to provision of resources, we need family and partners like Rössing Uranium.”
“Thank you for investing in the Namibian child, especially in the marginalised community in Ombyarundu.”
Also speaking at the same occasion, the Ruacana constituency councillor Andreas Shintama urged the parents to enrol children in school and encouraged them not to drop out.
